An interactive discussion of a patient case, looking at effective approaches for communicating with patients and how they can impact the patient’s diagnosis and treatment experience. In addition to hearing about effective communication techniques to optimise the patient experience, the attendees will also learn about the management of acute VTE, evaluating the risk of VTE recurrence for individual patients, and the benefits and risks of anticoagulation therapy for the acute and long-term management of VTE.

Dr Church is a consultant in pulmonary vascular and respiratory medicine. He trained in Glasgow, Cambridge, Papworth and Sydney. He has completed a PhD in understanding the basic mechanisms of inflammatory signalling in pulmonary vascular remodelling. He has a keen interest in both clinical and basic science research and is a principal investigator on a number of important clinical trials including looking at novel strategies to treat pulmonary hypertension. His basic science research focuses on the interplay of inflammation and hypoxia on the pulmonary vascular cells in particular the pulmonary artery fibroblast. He is one of 3 consultants in the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit which is the national referral centre for the Scottish Population. He is also one of the principal clinicians involved in management of venous thromboembolic disease in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and sits on the Glasgow Thrombosis committee. He is also chair of the British Thoracic Society SAG on pulmonary vascular medicine.

Dr Hunter is a Clinical Psychologist currently involved in researching the psychological impact of experiencing venous thrombo-embolism (VTE; blood clots). She teaches Abnormal & Clinical Psychology at Swansea University. Her interests lie in understanding responses to, and experiences of, illness and the promotion of wellbeing, as well as teaching and engaging students with the world of applied psychology.
